The serpentine drive belt (different from a timing belt) is a continuous loop belt that snakes its way through and around your engine compartment to drive power to major engine parts, like the alternator, water pump, power steering pump and the air conditioner compressor. It doesn’t require any maintenance, except that it doesn’t last forever and needs periodic replacement. If the belt breaks, the vehicle will stop running. If it needs replacement, the old belt is removed and a new serpentine drive belt is installed.
